A community-led trek through the heart of the Rwenzori Mountains. Day I takes you from Kithakakisa to Katharina Camp I. Day II continues to Mahunge Camp II โ forest, waterfalls, sacred sites, bamboo zones, and panoramic views.
The Kitholhu trail now features two powerful iterations. Day I leads from Kithakakisa to the serene Katharina Camp I, passing through ancient forest, a sacred cultural site, and the first bamboo zone. Day II climbs higher to Mahunge Camp II, crossing the Smilax Zone, waterfalls, and the Mahunge Silently Peak โ with sweeping views into the DRC. Every step supports LUCTO's community conservation work.
Your journey begins at Kithakatiso, the official entry point. You register with LUCTO, meet your local guides, and immediately enter the Smilax Zone โ dense with thorny vines and ancient hardwoods. The trail passes the famous "Bees in a Log" conservation site, then rests at Nkwekwe Rest Place where chimpanzee calls echo from the valley. You continue to the sacred Kibingo Kayeyi site, a living cultural heritage spot for the Bakonzo people. After Mabwe Rest Place and the first bamboo forest, you arrive at Katharina Camp I โ a peaceful overnight camp surrounded by moss and towering trees. The return journey follows the same trail, offering new perspectives and wildlife sightings.
